Everything You Need To Know About Huaca Pucllana Ruins

Where Are Huaca Pucllana Ruins Located?

Huaca Pucllana ruins are located in the heart of Lima, within the trendy upscale district of Miraflores. Just a short 10 minute taxi from the central Kennedy Park, it’s one of the best sites to see in the Peruvian capital - and a great introduction into the country’s deep ancient history before travelers head deeper into the Cusco and Sacred Valley regions. It’s important to note that the pyramids are located fully outside without cover, so it’s important to bring water and wear sunscreen if visiting during the warm summer months of the year.

Huaca Pucllana History

The Ancient History Of The Huaca Pucllana Ruins

First built by the Lima culture between 400-450 A.D, Huaca Pucllana was created as a giant, important ceremonial complex within what is now the Miraflores district. Millions of handmade adobe bricks were positioned in rows which gives the pyramid its famous staggered-step design, along with several plazas and smaller structures. While much of the site was reserved for the noble classes, important ceremonies, feasts and even human sacrifices occasionally took place here.

Several centuries later, the Wari civilization expanded its influence along Peru’s central coast and took control of Huaca Pucllana. However, instead of continuing to use the pyramid in the same way, the Wari turned much of the ancient complex into a large burial cemetery for the elite classes. Archaeological excavations have since uncovered more than 80 tombs with around 180 skeletons, showing just how important Huaca Pucllana remained despite its changing of rulers.

The Wari would then collapse around 1000 A.D, where the local Ychsma culture would then establish themselves throughout Lima and the surrounding valleys. Similar to the Wari, they used the site as a sacred place for burying their ancestors and also leaving offerings. The Ychsma would then be absorbed into the Inca around 1450 A.D, and the site would be left unused for centuries - until eventually being restored and dated in 1981 by archaeologist Isabel Flores Espinoza.
